Marathon Day! Email Article To a Friend View Printable Version

MarathonI did it! Not as well as I could have if I hadn't been hurt three weeks before the race, but still pretty well overall. When I first decided to do the race, I set a goal of 4:30. Due to injury before the race, I missed the goal by 14 minutes. But considering that three weeks before the race I didn't think I would be able to run the race at all, this is a great result.

I finished 1597th out of 1961 finishers (1989 starters) of the full marathon. I was 943rd out of 1086 men, 143rd out of 165 in the Men's 35-39 category.

I finished in 4:44:05, with an overall pace of 6:44/km or 10:50/mi.

My time at the halfway point was 2:08:41.

Somewhere around the 25 km mark, my leg started to hurt (not the injured part, but higher up on my shin, due to abnormal strain/motion due to having taped up my previous injury). After that I had to walk a significant part of the time. Run when I could, walk when I had to. I went into do-what-you-must-to-just-finish mode. And it worked.

I think that without the injury though, I think I could have finished around 4:15-ish...

My former co-worker Klaus finished in 3:54 (beating his target of 3:57)

Another former co-worker Kevin finished in 3:13 (107th place overall!) beating his target of 3:20. Holy cow!

Will I try another full marathon? I don't know. Half marathon distance is so easy, full marathon distance takes its toll. I'm not exactly built for it.

We'll have to see when the amnesia kicks in! The Edge to Edge Marathon from Uclulet to Tofino has a certain appeal... :-)

MarathonThere was no running this week due to injury, but on Saturday I tried running with my leg taped up, and it went perfectly. Looks like I'll be able to run the marathon next weekend after all. Yay!

Marathon
Distance:13.11 km
Time:1:17:21 hh:mm:ss
Avg HR:165 bpm
Time in HR zone:22:23 mm:ss
Avg Speed:10.18 km/h
Avg Pace:5:53 mm:ss/km
Weather:Mixed sun and cloud. Rain for last couple minutes
Notes:I tried running on a treadmill Thursday, but after 10 minutes my leg was hurting same as before. I was sure I was not going to be able to run the race next week.

Today was my last chance at finding a way to do the race. I bought a roll of hockey tape, and wrapped it around the sore part of my leg. Took three tries to get it the right tension.

The great news is that taping my sore leg totally helped and I was able to run my full target distance on the road. Pain free! I'm sure I can do the marathon next week. Woohoo! I would have been sorely disappointed if I wasn't able to.

MarathonWeek went just fine right up to my long run, when I injured myself. Not sure if I'll be able to do the marathon at this point.

Marathon
Distance:25.65 km
Time:3:05:53+ hh:mm:ss
Avg Speed:8.28 km/h
Avg Pace:7:14 mm:ss/km
Notes:I am screwed. I decided to run the parts of the marathon course that I had never run on before. I was really enjoying it. The course is hilly, but not as bad as where I have been training, so it feels good. There were even cheering spectators on Oak Bay Ave (maybe they were cheering for the bike race??) I was however running on the sidewalk (concrete). Bad idea. I was just past the 20 km mark when my left shin was in very bad pain. I had to walk (limp) 6 km back to the car (no payphones between where I was and the car)...This is a very bad thing. I don't know if I'll be able to recover from this in time for the race. Damn it!

MarathonBusy week. GPS was not functioning for most of it, so some of the mileages are only estimates.
