Hope everybody had a good Labour Day. It has been rainy here the
last couple days.

I went for a filty mountain bike ride in the morning yesterday,
and was home around noon. The southbound traffic was already bad,
and apparently got much worse. Glad I wasn't part of that.

Today we rounded up the meat chickens in the field and took them to
the poultry processing plant. Have to pick them up this afternoon
and spend some quality time with the vaccuum bagger. Always a
good time.

Long week, but made it through. On vacation for two weeks now. Of
course, the work has already started. Garage is clean now. Dawn
started it, I polished it off. Tomorrow we have to make a recycling
run, buy a tonne of pellets for the pellet stove, and unload them
into the garage. Get into town to drop off a sewing machine for
repairs, pick up a 1000 gallon water trough, and go to a co-workers
for a BBQ. Then Sunday try to see how far I can get on the shed
walls I started building last weekend.

Had a good time at the fair yesterday. Pictures here:

Spent part of today working on new walls for a shed. I built a
shed a few years ago for wood (with vinyl lathe sides that let air
flow through), but we decided not to get a wood stove and got a
wood pellet stove instead. Since I didn't need the shed for wood,
I started store the lawn mower and such in there, but the non-solid
sides are not ideal for that. I want the sides to be more rain
resistant, so I'm framing the walls properly now and will install
siding. So today I de-nailed all the old 2x4s left from the crates
the roofing panels came in last year, and started the framing. It's
2/3 done now. And my ankles are shedded from those damn ground
vines that are growing on one side of it. Man I hate those things.

Getting home last night was no fun at all. Traffic was backed
up three times as far as a normal for Friday night. Took me 45
minutes to drive what would take 5 min without traffic. There was
a stalled car in one of the middle lanes, a couple overheated cars
on the shoulders (both sides) and a police trap looking for people
driving down the shoulder and making an illegal left at the end
of the off ramp.

Then, after the traffic was moving again, they had a couple speed
traps set up. Nice. Bad cop. No donut.

Today, we're off to the local fall fair. My wife's entered one of
her chickens in the poultry judging contest.

And yes, for those keeping track, we had the new car for 13 days
before a chicken got a ride in it. I, for one, would have put
money on a chicken getting a ride before any fish did. I would
have lost the bet. Who knew?

Washed the car today to get some bird crap off it. Hardest to
remove poops ever! What the hell have those birds been eating?

I just had to share.

You're welcome.

After damaging my full suspension mountain bike on Saturday, I
have to wait for it to be repaired. So my Monday evening ride was
done on my old mountain bike. Really made me appreciate the full
suspension bike. Stuff that I can usually ride without thinking
about or slowing down is a lot sketchier and tougher on the old
bike. And a lot less fun.

Went up to Mount Washington for some downhill biking action
yesterday. Had a good day, but it was cut short mid-afternoon
when the rebound in my front forks broke, causing ne to go over
the handlebars, testing out my new chest and shoulder armour :-)
Took one more run down after that, but when the front suspension
is not working, it's just teeth rattling, so I headed home early.

Have to take it in to the shop for repairs next week and switch
to riding my hardtail bike until it's fixed.

Busy weekend!

On Saturday morning we found that a great horned owl had gotten
stuck in the netting around the chickens in the front field. So
we had to free it. Tricky as he had vicious talons!

Then we headed into town and picked up our new car. A sweet 2011
Volvo C30.

Today we headed down to the river for a couple hours to beat
the heat.

And on top of that, all weekend I worked away on building the
extension on the front deck. It's done now. Phew!

Went down to Auburn WA to see my favorite band (Rush) on
Saturday. Took the first sailing of the Coho down to Port Angeles
(6am. Had to leave the house at 4am. Gasp!), drove into Seattle
and went to the Experience Music Project/Sci-Fi Museum. Why is
it every time I go through Seattle during the daytime, the I-5
is like a freaking parking lot? Every time! It's fine at night
though. Concert ended at 11pm and I headed back to Vancouver. Made
one visit to a rest stop for a nap around 1am. Got to the ferry
in Vancouver around 3:30am, slept for an hour until they opened
the gates, got on the 5:15 am ferry. Slept for another couple
hours. Drove home, went to bed for a couple hours.

A long day, but worth it every time!

Woke up this morning and it was raining. First rain in ages. Dropped
the wife off at the sea plane terminal in Maple Bay and then went
for a ride on Mt Tzouhalem. I have to say that the smell of the
forest when you get a rain like that after a dry spell really
is wonderful.
