Went for a ride yesterday with a guy that I normally ride with. He's better than me on a bike in most respects except for jumping. He climbs better, descends better and is about the same on technical trails. But yesterady was not his day. Two wipe-outs. The first one was a hit to his left shoulder by a log he didn't see sticking out over the trail, knocking him off the ledge we were riding on. Dented his frame too. Then later he wiped out hitting his same shoulder on the other side, and knocked the wind out of him. It's usually me that takes the beating when riding...
Still beats working though.

Sorry about the lack of mailings lately. I've been busy.
Spent today finally fixing the sprinkler system. I've been meaning to do it since May, but the weather has been such crap that it wasn't needed. But summer hit this week and the lawn stopped growing and started turning brown. A week ago I was still having to mow it every two days.
Anyhow, I replaced all the valves and a bunch of the plumbing around the valves. The freaking thing was put together by somebody who was either a misunderstood genius, or a sadist. Actually, maybe both. It was painful to work on, but after 5 hours of sweating, cursing, and bleeding (one pipe broke and took a hunk of my middle finger's flesh with it), it's all working now. Hopefully that will solve the yearly struggle with getting it working in the spring.
Tomorrow morning we'll have happy lawn and garden.

Happy Independance Day for those of you in the US. For the rest of you, happy Sunday.
I spent most of today teaching the long grass and daisies along the fence line and ditch to fear my American friend John (Deere) and his Swedish buddy Stihl. :-)

For those of you in Canada, happy Canada Day! For those of you everywhere else, happy Thursday.
It's rainy and cold here today. Doesn't feel like July.

Had a good ride Monday night, but was kinda paying for the long ride up the fireroad at Tzouhalem the day before :-)
Finished studying for the first of my Oracle exams and wrote it tonight. Passed it fine, but it was way harder than the practice exams that were with the study guide I'm using. Hopefully that was the hardest one. I've been told it is, but you never know. Guess I'll find out when I do the next one...

We watched Avatar on blu-ray last night. Now I see what all the fuss it about with blu-ray. The picture is freaking brilliant (noticibly so compared to the DVD). I suspect for a lot of movies it won't make that much of a difference, but for some it really will.
Went for a ride on Mount Tzouhalem today. Looking at the maps of the trails in the area versus where the GPS says I actually rode is very confusing. Fun ride though I kept ending back on the fire road on the way back (rather be on the trails on the way down.)

Played a round of golf yesterday for the first time in several months. It was pretty messy. A few good shots and a whole lot of bad ones. Really should have hit the driving range first.

Went to donate blood today. It was my 80th donation. Vampire FAIL.
The 20-something guy who was putting the needle in was a tool. To start with, he was overly assertive with my arm. No "can we move your arm a bit this way". He'd just grab it and crank it over. Then there was his tendency to enjoy rearranging himself. Multiple times. Maybe he liked me. Maybe he just needed a shower. I don't know, but I wasn't enjoying the show so much.
Then he put the needle in. Didn't hurt (I was expecting it to), but as I am watching the hose, I see it's filling really slowly. So I tell him that I think there's a problem. I'm quite fast at donating and the hose should have filled up fast. So he pins my arm down and starts digging around with the needle. For about 5 minutes. While the blood pressure cuff is still cranked up. Until may arm is blue and my hand is numb. Finally one of the more senior nurses comes over tries for a few seconds then tells him that's enough. During the delay, the blood in the needle had coagulated and she (rightly) knew there was no way it was going to get better. When she pulled out the needle that was confirmed in a spectacularly gross fashion.
They are normally pretty great down there and do good work, but I think he's on my list of people who I won't let jab me with the donation needle again.

Interesting discovery today. I went out in the truck to get a video for tonight (it's the wife's truck, so I don't drive it much. It usually has a trailer attached to it). What I discovered it that the liquor store next to the video store has wireless video surveilance cameras that broadcast on the same frequency and format as the backup camera in our truck. From a block away the screen started showing the inside of the store. While driving home I noticed it come on at one other place (showing a tree or something). It was a weaker signal and only showed for a second.

I've started putting the intros from the joke mailings onto the site. Like it?
